Before there were vineyards in every valley north of San Francisco, before Napa and Sonoma were household names, before there was a California wine world at all, there was Buena Vista. Agoston Haraszthy immigrated from Europe in 1840 in pursuit of opportunity and freedom in the burgeoning American West. Following the forty-niners in search of gold in the hills of Northern California, he settled in Sonoma, birthplace of California and capital of the short-lived California Republic, where he founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857. Despite his abrupt death in 1869, the challenges of the depression, prohibition, and phylloxera infestation; his Buena Vista Winery has not only endured but also prospered. Today, the legend is being re-born under the vision of Jean-Charles Boisset. The original winery is now a California Historic Landmark, and home to the winery, tasting room, and visitor’s center.
This wine is made from grapes from vineyards from Yountville to St. Helena. The wine ages for 18 months in French Oak barrels, (35% new) and is then racked and bottled without filtering. Earthy-cherry aromas linger in this elegant, restrained red. Great acidity integrates with cranberry and sandalwood while red fruits abound. The finish sweetens the palate with a hint of maple but keeps things dry with violet petals.
