Edmunds St. John North Canyon Road Syrah 2013

The wine still smells young and reduced, showing black fruit, savory spices and salted, smoked meat. Among Edmunds’ biggest wines, it still manages to whisper, cloaking its assertive flavors in silky tannins and an energetic frame of acid.

Barsotti soil - weathered/decomposed granite - similar to that found in the northern Rhone. First bought two rows of syrah grapes there in 1988 and thought it made such lovely wine that he urged them to plant quite a bit more Syrah and has been buying since.

De-stemmed, fermentation without inoculation, two manual punch downs twice daily. Very neutral French barrels …spontaneous malolatctic, a small bit of SO2, left on lees until late winter and racked into stainless. Very hands off.
